The Pacific Motorway
The completion of the $750 million Pacific Motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast is set to trigger a population boom and a boost to industries in the Brisbane/Gold Coast corridor, paving the way for the two cities to become one continuous urban area with a population of more than two million within five years.

The Gold Coast Motorway offers fast access to Brisbane

Analysts forecast the world class motorway will open the floodgates to domestic tourism on the Coast, which is expected to regain up to $100 million annually in lost tourism revenue. The property industry and businesses on the Coast are also expected to make strong gains with a greater demand for property, goods and services here.

The 43km Pacific Motorway is the largest road construction project undertaken in Queensland and one of the largest in Australia. It has been completed at up to twice the speed of similar upgrades. The final 8.3km section is on track for completion in September.

The number of cars on the completed motorway is expected to increase dramatically and to double from the current 85,000 a day to 170,000 a day by 2020, fuelled by continuing growth in South East Queensland.

Gold Coast property and business analyst Alan Midwood predicts the completed Pacific Motorway will generate an unprecedented surge in population growth in the Brisbane/Gold Coast corridor.

"By 2005, an extra 10,000 people will move into the corridor every year to live," he said.

Mr Midwood said the new motorway would make both the Gold Coast and Brisbane more accessible to residents in the corridor. "This will bring the two cities closer until they form one continuous urban area with a combined population of more than two million within five years."

He said the growth generated by the Motorway would be accelerated by a shortage of land in the Gold Coast's northern suburbs on the tip of the corridor following enormous population growth there.
